FAQ 1. Why does sending my email fail on the first attempt? (Applies only if using Truepath's SMTP mail server) Email fails on the first attempt when using the Truepath mail server, but then works great after that. Why? Email will fail to send on the first attempt because the Truepath mail server requires authentication in order to send your email message. When trying to send an email without authentication, the Truepath mail server rejects your attempt to send a message; however, your email client continues to work and receives email normally. Since you were able to receive email, the Truepath mail server has now authenticated your account and the second time you try to send, it works (assuming you try to send again within a few minutes). In order to configure your email account so that it sends successfully on the first attempt, implement one of these three solutions: a) Contact your ISP (the company you pay each month to connect to the internet) and ask them for your SMTP (outbound email) settings. Use these settings as explained by your ISP's support documentation. b) Configure your email settings so that your email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Evolution, etc.) first checks for email (downloads email) AND THEN sends email. This is also commonly refered to as "POP before send". Outlook and Evolution support this feature, but Thunderbird does not. c) Configure your email settings so that it uses authentication. In the outbound server settings, look for a setting called server authentication or look at these examples for Outlook or Thunderbird. 2. Is email secure for sending sensitive information? No email is not secure for sending sensitive information such as credit card of social security numbers. If you have to send sensitive information, then use pgp encryption or send email securely via SSH.
